Feedback from members of the audience

On Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June 2024, we staged 6 multi-sensory concert experiences of Milton and Handel’s L’Allegro Part I in collaboration with BitterSuite and Milton’s Cottage. Dancer Guides from BitterSuite led audience members through a blindfolded, immersive journey designed to heighten awareness of how sound and senses unite, and the constant interplay between the two.

In current science, there are thought to be at least 33 senses. This performance focused on accessing the sense of ‘introspection’ – the sense of our own internal body, emotions, imagination, memory. The awareness of that which makes up our perception of the world in and around us.

Both Milton and Handel eventually lost their sight and continued to create great art. This project celebrates their work as vision impaired artists, as well as celebrating Deafblind Awareness Week 2024 and Buckinghamshire’s heritage as the birthplace of the Paralympics. The project were co-devised with artists and local residents with vision impairment.

We joined forces with Bucks Council Integrated SEND Service and Milton’s Cottage Museum to present an adapted workshop-performance of Visionaries for a group of deafblind young people, together with their parents, carers and interveners. VB singers and musicians performed excerpts from L’Allegro Part I, whilst facilitator led participants through a sensory story massage. It was an emotional and inspiring morning for all, with brilliant engagement and reactions from the young people in the room.

A big thank you to Buckinghamshire Council, The Arts Society – Vale of Aylesbury and The Rothschild Foundation whose generous support made this project possible. We’re also very grateful to GuideDogs UK and the RNIB for supporting this project in kind.

This was a collaborative project co-produced by Vache Baroque, Milton’s CottageBitterSuite and Bucks Council’s Integrated SEND Service (MSI Specialist Team).
