In June 2023, our five JBYAP singers prepared a staging of Henry Purcell’s ‘Masque of the Seasons’ from his opera The Fairy Queen with acclaimed director Thomas Guthrie. They performed the piece twice accompanied by the VB Band, as part of an abridged two-hander version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream played by Paul O’Mahony and Hannah Barrie from the multi award-winning theatre company Out of Chaos.

In the morning, 60 primary schoolchildren joined us at The Vache for an outdoor promenade performance punctuated by a lantern procession around the verdant grounds. In the evening, our VBFriends joined us for a second performance inside the Vache hall.

We have been sharing our love for the seasons since Summer 2022, when we partnered with two state primaries in Bucks to deliver our first series of music and craft workshops. The 60 year 5s reacted artistically to seasons-related music by Vivaldi and Purcell by drawing, singing rounds, discussing climate change, trying musical instruments and creating beautiful lanterns ready for the 2023 procession.

Responses to ‘These workshops made me feel…’
“Happy, free, alive, wonderful”
“Very positive”

In Summer 2023, we repeated the workshops at The Vache with children and parents from Wycombe Refugee Partnership. Participants joined us in the hall for the evening performance.

“My kids had a great time. The children say that they did not want it to end and come back home. I really don’t know how to thank you for creating good memories for the kids.”

We are grateful to the Tsukanov Family Foundation for their generous support of this project.
